Just before the Christmas holidays we had the second EC review of our iCamp project. Same procedure as every year: independent experts get all the documents  (deliverables) from the project that were produced during the year; they spend some sleepless nights before the review to go through all the papers (sorry again for submitting some rather long deliverables ;-)), and have a look at what is otherwise available in terms of prototype etc. and then we all meet and do some ppts to show the work; finally and luckily we also have some discussions;

It is really good to get the opinion of individuals who are not directly involved in the work, but who are experts on the subject and deal with similar questions.

And this time it has been especially pleasant as we have been congratulated on our good work. This review has been a nice finish for 2007 and it should be a good start for 2008.

One of the recommendations has been to improve our dissemination strategy and to spread the word about the nice things that we do in our project. So I hope that we will get together with some key people following similar approaches (e.g. the PLE approach) and join forces.

Flock 1.0

November 6, 2007

Antonio Tapiador, a researcher at the UPM (Spain), who is also working in the iCamp project recently pointed me to the latest release of Flock 1.0. Some of our group have been following the development of this web browser with a special focus on whether this browser would fit for specific educational purposes.

As it calls itself “the social web browser” we have been discussing on how this browser could e.g. support someone in enhancing social networking competencies in the digital world.

I am just familiarizing myself with this new release version of Flock. I had used one of the previous version for a while but then I moved back to my regular web browser. Now I see that it has advanced especially in terms of integrated services. My very first impression is that of some overload. But I have to dedicate a bit more time to it and see if and how I can configure it to my needs and preferences. I will give it a try…

btw. this post is actually edited and uploaded via Flock.

although there was no official best poster award at the EC-TEL06 I am convinced that we would have won the competition with our iCamp tent.

Personal Learning Environments - Live at Edinburgh

My presentation at the PLE workshop at ALT-C in Edinburgh

[ Weblog entry in "The Wales-Wide Web"]

Regular readers will know I have been messing with different video formats for the last three or so months. Thsi is the first video presentation I am really pleased with. I think the live recording is much better than trying to reproduce within a studio the adrenelin of speaking live.We are working on a wiki to give access to the full outcomes of the workshop.

In this short talk by Graham Attwell some important issues related with the misleading policy discourse around eLearning and live long learning are addressed. The SCORM imaget hat is provided in this talk is also worth seeing. Thanks Graham!

conference announcement

August 23, 2006

EARLI Biennial Conference 2007

…EARLI 2007 will provide an opportunity not only to present the results of your recent work, but also to discuss research findings with other scholars. The theme of the conference, Developing Potentials for Learning, has at least two levels of meaning: the growing importance of enriching the potentials of learning and the unidirectional trend of increasing possibilities in educational systems both play an important role in educational research… [Beno Csapo & Csaba Csikos on the Conference Website]

The 12th European Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI2007) will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from August 28 to September 1, 2007. The deadline for proposal submission is November 30, 2006. Interested parties should have no problem finding a slot among the many conference themes. [Sebastian Fiedler]
